The installation starts with a site survey, not a catalogue. The installer measures the opening width, checks the slope and ground surface, confirms where the power supply reaches, and assesses whether an existing gate is suitable for automation. Gate weight, hinge condition, and swing path are all checked at this stage. For a new gate, the survey determines whether swing, sliding, or cantilever automation suits the space, a swing gate needs a clear arc, a sliding gate needs run-back room, and a cantilever system suits uneven or sloped ground where a ground track would cause problems.
Once the gate type is confirmed, the groundwork begins. Post foundations are dug and concreted to a depth that accounts for Brentwood’s clay soil, which moves seasonally and can shift shallow posts out of alignment. The gate leaves are hung or the sliding track is set, and the motor and control panel are mounted and wired to BS 7671 using an armoured supply run from the nearest suitable point. Safety edges and photocells are fitted at this stage as part of the standard specification, not added afterwards. The control panel is wired to accept remote handsets, a keypad, or a GSM module depending on what access method was agreed during the survey.
Commissioning is the final stage and the one most often rushed on cheaper jobs. The installer sets the opening and closing travel limits so the gate stops cleanly at each end without straining the motor. The auto-reverse force is adjusted and tested so the gate stops and reverses if it meets resistance, a requirement under BS EN 12453. Photocells and safety edges are tested in sequence, and the full opening and closing cycle is run several times to confirm alignment, motor function, and sensor response. Remote handsets, keypads, or app access are paired and tested before handover, and the customer is shown how to use the manual release in the event of a power cut.
